Description

Film is presented by the Central Television announcer Mike Prince who provides a voice over throughout.
We see the exterior of the Central Television studios on Broad Street in Birmingham, a still of the new Lenton Lane studio in Nottingham and shots of the Duke of Edinburgh opening Lenton Lane on 2 March 1984.
We then see a general tour of the studios in Birmingham and clips from some of the programmes produced by Central Television. We see Crossroads actors in make-up and on the studio floor in Studio 2; activities in the Birmingham newsroom of Central News including Richard Hudson-Evans on the phone and the news editor taking a call about a fire at the army depot in Donnington which is followed by views taken by the ENG crew at the scene. We also see Bob Warman on the phone and briefly the titles for Newshound. Rehearsals and VT Editing for The Saturday Show; the Junior Television Workshop; rehearsals for Summer Royal at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham; Bullseye on set; Central's MCR (Master Control Room) transmission area. Clips are shown from: What's Happening and Dizzy Feet (Golden Rose of Montreaux winner).

The next section looks at revenue made from commercials and we see clips from adverts for Clover margarine and the Kingfisher Centre in Redditch and shots of commercials in the video tape library.

Sports presenter Gary Newbon links the next section which is a montage of sporting events covered by Central including football, pro-celebrity golf, speedway, gymnastics and ice skating.

We then see the OB (outside broadcast) unit on location at Belvoir Castle for an episode of the Venture business series and covering the Royal Show at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Central's boss Gordon Hobday is seen at a promotional event.

In at piece to camera Reg Harcourt describes Central's political coverage and interviews the parliamentary lobby correspondent Andy Grice.

The producer and presenter of Here and Now, Zia Mohyeddin introduces clips from the programme including an interview with Lenny Henry.

We then see a group of children watching a Central schools programme and see clips from the educational series Ways With Words and Good Health.

Documentaries are covered with clips from Encounter, Decade of Destruction, England Their England, Bakers Dozen and The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady and shots of a film editor at work at a Steenbeck. We also see the press launch for the series 'Kennedy' and a TV Times award being received for the series.

Finally Mike Prince wraps up the programme from the Central Television announcers studio.
