Description

Su Evans and Geoffrey Bond introduce the programme from a studio set.

The first item is a film insert in which Bessy Hawkes, museum guide at the Black Country Museum in Tipton, describes the features of a typical Victorian working class kitchen.

We see a tram at the museum and a row of restored terraced houses.

Inside one of the houses Bessy Hawkes (in Victorian costume) describes a typical working day for a housewife of the time, explains the operation of the oven, the various implements and the make-up of a Black Country groaty pudding.

Next we visit Charlecote Park in Warwickshire, a large manor house owned by the National Trust. We see Edna Randle, a former kitchen made at Charlecote, who reminisces about her working life.

After an establishing shot of Charlecote House, Geoffrey Bond is seen in the kitchen describing the various items that are used to cook and prepare food in a large manor house.

Next back in the studio Geoffrey Bond and valuation expert John Haycraft of Phillips in Knowle talk to four members of the public who have brought in examples of antique kitchen ware.

Finally, Su Evans interviews the entertainer Michael Barrymore about cooking and antiques.
