Description

Most of the views of Stoke on Trent are library pictures cut from Look Around: The Potteries. We see artist and writer Arthur Berry walking in Stoke. His commentary describes the character of the area and its people. We see views of terraced houses (including demolition shots), pottery kilns and miners leaving a colliery. There are also views inside a pottery. An establishing shot of C & A in Stoke is newly shot. After views of a statue of Josiah Wedgwood a manager of a local pottery is interviewed about the potter's craft. There are some shots of a modern pottery with workers using a spray gun to glaze and applying transfers that are not library pictures. The next sequence shows library pictures of pigeon racing. We then visit The Green Star pub at Smallthorne which is also known as La Verda Stelo and is a pub in which some of the locals speak the international language of Esperanto - the reporter Jack Holloway is also present. We then see the exterior of the Arnold Bennett Museum and stills of the local author. The next section is a man talking to camera about local houses of worship and the large number of chapels. We see exterior shots of chapels and a series of stills and inside one where a choir are singing. Finally the reel ends with mute shots of Staffordshire Oat Cakes being produced in a factory.
