Description

Miner talking to camera about safety cuts to shots of pit lift and miners heading underground (with mining folk song as audio - this sequence was probably used for opening titles).

We then see a group of miners entering the pit cage and handing over their tokens. A sound only interview talks about the character of the miner with reference to Whitwick Colliery in Leicestershire (where these scenes were probably shot).

The next section is a more general look at the National Coal Board with further audio only interviews and shots of coal mining (this time likely to have been supplied by NCB). We see miners working underground (much of this material has been removed and is audio commentary only).

We continue with further NCB shots of miners walking home and a miner in a tin bath in front of the hearth as the commentary talks nostalgically about the old ways. Miners moving from the north east to Leicestershire is also referred to. There is a further miner (possibly at Whitwick) talking to camera about safety before we end with further underground shots and the folk song again.
