Description

Opening shots show a caged big cat and a snake. Richard Thompson introduces the programme sitting behind a desk. He gets up to go to a map where he points out the locations of zoos and animal parks in the Midlands. For each location we then cut to filmed stills of the sites. Stills show Wellingborough Zoo, birdland at Bourton on the Water, the gardens at Charlecote, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Dudley Zoo, Hints Zoo near Lichfield, and Pan's Garden at Ashover. Stills are also shown of Whipsnade Zoo which although it is outside the Midlands is a popular attraction. We also see stills of the town of Woodstock in Oxfordshire which was said to be the location of the original royal menagerie.

We then visit Dudley Zoo where we begin with film of feeding time for the tigers followed by shots of visitors, concentrating on children and views of flamingos cut to music. Children are seen riding a camel and we also see polar bears, kangaroos, wolves and seals (some shots are also cut to music). Richard Thompson then talks to the zoo's director Cyril Grace about the safety of visitors, the health of animals kept in zoos and the strict rules about importing wild animals. Finally Thompson talks to the zoo's giraffes, Grace and Geoffrey.
