Description

We open with shots of traffic in snow and pedestrians walking on slush covered pavements followed by heavy rain and traffic in fog (these shots are in the Midlands as the commentary talks about how we envy those who live in more fortunate climates). We then cut to the Isles of Scilly with views of St Mary and the shoreline. The commentary contains local vox pops about life on the islands which are off the coast of Cornwall. In the Mermaid pub local musicians perform (including a spoon player) and there are further audio only vox pops about local life.

The main industry on the islands is flower growing. Richard Thompson talks to local grower Billy Hicks about his business. We see rooms of cut flowers and fields. He then talks to grower Rosie Mumford. Next, Thompson takes a boat trip to St Agnes where he talks to the former lighthouse keeper Jack Hicks who now also grows flowers. Back on St Mary's we see views of houses and shop fronts in Hugh Town as the commentary talks about the inter relations of the various local families. Thompson then talks to Captain Joe who is one of the oldest inhabitants who describes local ship wrecks (some stills are used in this section) and Billy Cameron Junior who is a local carter. We also see the disabled town crier Wilfred at work.

On the docks we see boxes of flowers being loaded on board the Scillonian. During its voyage to Penzance Thompson talks to the captain about the vessel. We then see the Cornishman train leaving Penzance. Finally in the wholesale flower market in Birmingham, Richard Thompson talks to local dealers about the importance of the Scilly flower industry as we see views of the market in operation.
