Description

The item starts with views of the preserved steam locomotive 'Lion' (filmed at Dunchurch in Warwickshire). Richard Thompson introduces the feature from the loco which appeared in the film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt'. Next whilst travelling in a railway carriage Thompson interviews District Engineer Bill Robertson about the history of rail transport. We see shots of new welded rails being laid. At Coventry, Thompson talks to architect Bill Hedley about his work on the new railway station for the city. We see views of the station under construction as well as views of Tamworth and Stafford stations which are also seeing work in preparation for new electrified services. Next at Crewe, Thompson interviews Mr Wilson who is the local electrical traction engineer about the new electric service. We see views of the new electric locomotives and lines being installed. Finally there are views of the new signalling that is required and we see inside a modern signal box. A description is provided by assistant signal and telecommunication engineer Mr F.W. Young whom is likely to be a man seen travelling in a train.
