Description

The film begins with scenes shot at the Lace Web Spring Company in Sandiacre which was managed by the filmmaker, Ivan Kingsbury. We see women working on making the springs and the head of the Engineering department and one of the other foremen on the shop floor. We also see men operating machinery and women attaching the springs to webbing for car seats. We then see shots of various people arriving for work at the factory (in Cross Street).

We then see men playing football on the Lace Web and Buoyant Playing Fields in Sandiacre. The only colour section follows which shows a fire brigade practice on the same fields (The Buoyant Upholstery Company had their own fire brigade or this may be the Auxiliary Fire Service). We see them unravelling hoses and one man climbs through a mock-up of a window. More rewinding and unravelling of hoses follows. We also see some of the women from the factory having a picnic on the grass, playing tennis (with a train running past in the background) and sunbathing.

The next sequence shows a military parade at Hyde Park involving Ivan Kingsbury’s former regiment, the Yorkshire and Lancashire. We see a large group of men in suits and medals gathered near the Wellington Memorial and a wreath with a label reading "Cavalry Old Command". We also see shots of men riding horses on Rotten Row.

This is followed by scenes shot during the Sandiacre Carnival in August 1938. We see various groups (including the British Legion and the AFS) marching along Derby Road (past the Stapleford and Sandiacre Co-operative Society) and onto the Recreation Ground and we also see part of the Carnival parade. Next we see the filmmaker, Ivan Kingsbury, in fancy dress getting ready to go collecting. Similar scenes follow in wet weather (this was for an additional parade and Drumhead service held on 28 August 1938) which ended with members of the British Legion (Ivan Kingsbury was the local president) marching into a marquee on the carnival grounds. We also see the filmmaker’s friend, Ray Doncaster in the Market Square in Sandiacre and the band marching past a raised dais on which stand local dignitaries.

This is followed by a sequence showing motor racing at Donington Park during which we see the filmmaker's wife Maude and another woman watching the action through the fence (likely to be the Donington Park Grand Prix held on 22 October 1938). The German Mercedes Benz and Auto Union cars are visible on the circuit. The film ends with a sequence showing a Remembrance Day Parade from Sandiacre to All Saints Church at Risley (which was held on 6 November 1938). We see two men in uniform and a man with a poppy wreath approaching Sandiacre church and various shots of people in the streets around the Market Square, waiting for the parade to start. We then see the parade itself (including members of the British Legion and the Scouts) marching from Sandiacre to Risley and see the parade entering the church.

Notes

The playing fields seen in this film belonged jointly to the Lace Web Spring Company and the Buoyant Upholstery Company. The Buoyant factory burnt down in January 1940, an event recorded by Ivan Kingsbury in the film [Kingsbury/Doncaster: Buoyant Upholstery Fire and Incendiary Bomb]. As well as managing the Lace Web Spring Company, Ivan Kingsbury was also President of the Sandiacre and Risley branch of the British Legion. The railway line seen in the film ran from Sandiacre station to the Stanton Ironworks at Ilkeston.
