Description

Gary Newbon and Brian Clough look back at 1970s football matches featuring Midlands teams. This week the pair focus on Derby County.

Clough, who was then manager of Nottigham Forest, is interviewed by Newbon in the trophy room at the City Ground. He talks about the current state of Midlands football and his time as manager of Derby County (1967 - 1973).

Newbon then introduces extended highlights of the division one match between Derby County and Arsenal at the Baseball Ground from November 1972.

The scorers for Derby are: John McGovern, Alan Hinton, Roy McFarland, Kevin Hector and Roger Davies.

In the second half of the programme we see highlights of Derby County's first round second leg European Cup match against Slovan Bratislava which took place at the Baseball Ground in October 1975. Derby won by three goals to nil. Scorers are: Jeff Bourne and Frannie Lee x 2.

Commentary for both matches is provided by Hugh Johns.

Notes

Central Production number 1472/87

The programme is promoted as a chance for viewers to see some of the best matches from the television series Star Soccer which had run on a Suday afternoon on ATV and Central from 1968 until 14 May 1983. (There had also been an earlier version of Star Soccer running on ATV London between 1965 and 1968 featuring London clubs).

However the match against Arsenal although originally shot for Star Soccer appears to have been sourced from the LWT regional programme The Big Match. Presumably the ATV version had not been archived. The game against Slovan Bratislava was from the Midweek Match.
