Description

We see library pictures of Bilston steelworks which closed in 1980 (some of these shots including the demolition have been removed). We then see David Young, Chair of the Manpower Services Commission unveiling a plaque to open the Springvale Training Centre. Young is interviewed about the scheme which is a pilot for the Government's new YTS project. Tingle then reports from the site of Bilston steelworks. He interviews members of the action committee that was set up to try to save the plant. When their campaign failed ten members of the committee pooled their redundancy money and took over the local working men's club. We see exterior and interior views of Springvale Social Club. Money from the club has helped refurbish the next door training centre where young people can learn a trade and receive wages from the YTS. Interview with manager Terry Page. We see views of young people working at the centre. The item ends with library pictures of Bilston steel works cut with pictures of the derelict site today.
