Description

The reel is accompanied by organ music and a small amount of commentary for the first third. We open with Father Christmas arriving in the centre of Hereford on board a stage coach passing the Black Swan Hotel. He meets the mayor and sets off with a sack on his back passing a crowd of people (likely to be Christmas 1967 or 68). This is followed by night shots of Christmas lights in Hereford and shop window (including Greenlands) displaying toys and gifts.

We then see snow covered houses in the countryside and a man in a tractor clearing snow along a lane with a snow plough. There are also shots of garden birds feeding in the snow. Next we see spring time scenes of flowers, blossom, a woman inspecting the blossom trees, posing for the camera with a dog, free range chickens and cows in a field. We also see work underway to repair the replace the roof of the farm. "Spring on the Farm". A sequence shot c1960 showing a woman holding a bunch of flowers, a man and later a boy using a petrol Atco lawn mower, close ups of daffodils and a dog and cat playing together. The next section shows a man in a field stringing up twine for hop plants, a girl skipping in the garden, children working on the farm including a boy with a milk churn and the farmer feeding cattle in the yard. The farming sequence continues with a tractor in a field, tree felling close to the farmhouse, cows in a field and a woman feeding the chickens.

Next inside the farmhouse we see a boy doing his homework at a table with books spread out. He is joined by a man and the pair are then see playing table tennis instead. "But where is Gilliam?" We see that she is in bed suffering from mumps. Further domestic scenes follow with Gilliam with the dog in front of an open fire and Dad in his armchair. A short b/w section (the only on the reel) shows the children practising archery in the garden. We then see a Christmas cake being iced and the family decorating their living room for Christmas by putting up holly and paper chains. The early 1960s shot scenes continue with boys playing billiards followed by scenes of the boys sliding on a frozen stream and further winter shots including long icicles on the farmhouse.

Next we have a Christmas party for children. The children sit at a table wearing party hats and then pose for the camera in a group with balloons. Further winter scenes follow with the boys rolling a large snow ball and then seen building a snow man. They throw snowballs and are joined by the dog. Briefly we see a steam hauled express train passing the family farm.
