Description

We see several exterior shots of the new headquarters for the Birmingham Post and Mail which is on Colmore Circus in Birmingham. We then see the previous base for the newspapers which was on the corner of New Street and Cannon Street. Inside the old building the cramped conditions of the printing presses are evident.

Reg Harcourt interviews Sir Eric Clayson, Chairman of the Post and Mail; Richard Crabtree, Managing Director; and Frank Owens, Editor of the Mail about the move to the new building and its technological advances.

We see newspaper vans blocking part of Cannon Street and the solution in the new building which incorporates a road inside allowing vehicles to enter the delivery area. Inside the building we also see the front office which is in an open plan style; the 'tele-ad girls'; reels of paper in the basement; the printing plates being cast; and the printing of the newspaper in the machine hall.

Notes

The Post and Mail building was designed by John H. Madin and Partners. Despite a voice over in this report saying that it had been designed to last 100 years the building was demolished in 2005.
