Description

We see Mallinslee village in Shropshire which will be the planned centre of the new Telford development. (several shots removed). Aerial shots show the current state of the development which is expected over the next twenty years to cover 30 square miles and house a population of a quarter of a million people. Telford also incorporates areas that gave birth to the industrial revolution: we see shots of Coalbrookdale (shots missing) including a clock tower and iron rail display; the bridge over the River Severn at Ironbridge and the remains of an iron works at Blists Hill. In contrast we next see two modern factories in Telford, one making clothing and the other the Eaton Yale and Towne factory making tractors and earth moving machinery. Interview with Ed Hilton, managing director of Eaton Yale and Towne about their recent move from a site at Wednesfield. New housing estate have been built and we see a view of the Sutton Hill estate from Madeley church yard and tracking shots of houses with a voice over from local people describing conditions. Next we visit the home of Rick and Pauline Williams at Sutton Hill who are interviewed about opportunities in the new town. The new arrivals on the estate mostly frequent the Red Admiral pub (all shots of the pub have been removed) but the older inhabitants of Telford drink in the All Nations pub. We see a get-together of locals including singing and a toast from Percy Pointin ("To all friends around the Wrekin"). Local men Jim Creswell and Fred Richards are interviewed. Finally there are vox pops with newly arrived children at the Alexander Fleming junior school and scenes of the pupils having an outdoor lesson.

Notes

Some Coalbrookdale material removed to Ironbridge item from 22 June 1979. Most of the missing shots were aerial views of Telford. The new town development was known as Dawley New Town until 1968 when it was renamed Telford after the engineer Thomas Telford.
