Description

We open with a civic event in the Market Place in Retford to mark the Coronation which was held on 12 May 1937. A group of old soldiers stand to attention whilst a band plays. The Mayor of Retford Alderman Eric Spencer watches a march past. Then as rain falls crowds with umbrellas watch as a young girl (the Mayor's 8-year-old daughter Beryl Spencer) is crowned. The crown had earlier been seen being carried on a cushion past the crowd. The girl climbs into a carriage and is joined by several other children.

We then see a parade through the streets (in poor weather) led by a band and also including horse drawn vehicles, lorries and decorated floats (there are camera speed problems with parts of this sequence). In the Market Place there are stalls and a small stage has been built where a minstrel act is seen performing. A group of school children walk past the camera in pairs and are later seen at a party tea. We also see the children arriving at the Majestic Theatre (a local cinema). The next section is in colour and shows the streets of Retford decorated with bunting and union flags. We also see traffic passing the corner of Grove Street and an establishing shot of the Percy Laws camera shop (likely to be the film-maker). A group of older residents are seen leaving the Majestic.

The final sections return to b/w and appears to show further civic events for the Mayor of Retford Alderman Eric Spencer. He is seen laying a foundation stone (possibly for the new senior girls school at Hallcroft on 2 July 1937), a group of people outside a building (one is wearing an academic gown) and finally workers on a building site (may be part of the construction of a new park which took place around this time).
