Description

We are first introduced to the Methodist, Baptist and Parish Churches in Countesthorpe. This is followed by views of the village from the parish church tower. There is then a series of shots of housing estates that have been developed in Countesthorpe since the end of the Second World War. Footage of the Gala Day, a village fete held in June, is then followed by men playing bowls at the village Bowls Club in 1970. We then see senior citizens waiting for coaches to take them on a trip and then the demolition of Hospital Lane Bridge. We then return to the centre of Countesthorpe and the Square, which is followed by footage of the gymkhana including horse jumping at Leicester Road. This is followed by footage of the Scouts' Gala which includes a carnival procession led by a marching pipe band, a boys' football team being presented with a trophy, a performing monkey/chimpanzee, children playing on a trampoline and a small army tank and finally a performance by the Linden School orchestra. We then see the 1970 opening ceremony of the scout hut in Countesthorpe led by Lord Cranshaw who subsequently makes presentations to Mrs Soars, Mrs Male, Mr Gregory, Mr Paul and Mr Kind. The scouts then demonstrate how to cook on a camp fire. We then see a visit by the mayor of Leicester, Alderman Herbert Stanley Tomlinson, to the village in 1972. It begins at the infants school annex where they are met by Dr Hoffler and Mr Seaton. They then go to the infants school in Main Street where temporary classrooms were officially opened and is followed by a visit to the Parish Church before departing. Mr Marsden, the former head teacher at Linden School who retired in 1972, is shown working at a desk. Footage of activities at Linden School is shown, including a game of rounders and a literacy class. This is followed by a view from the Parish Church's tower in 1972. There are then exterior and interior shots of shops in the village. Albert Burford, the local postman is featured as are the members of the Parish Council including: Mr Cheney, Mr Greg, Mrs Findley, Mr Nowell, Mr Winterton, Mr Pollard, Mr Cosby and Mr Riddington.
