Rob Whitehouse reports from Coventry where it is claimed the Labour led council is discriminating against lesbians and gay men. We see a group of Liberal party members protesting outside Coventry City Council by laying yellow flowers. There are interviews with Councillor Rob Wheway (Liberal) and Councillor Peter Lister (Labour leader of Coventry City Council). Whitehouse also talks to teacher Wes Webb who has faced discrimination since coming out. Later in the report we see Webb manning a confidential phone line ‘Coventry Friend’. Whitehouse next visits the London borough of Haringey which also has a Labour council but employs people to protect gay rights. Interview with council deputy leader Steve King who says that it is Labour party policy to proceed with equal rights. In contrast Coventry City Council refuses to make a declaration of non-discrimination that is expected by the party nationally. Interview with local gay rights campaigners Fiona McLachie and Terry Donovan. In Nottingham, which is another Labour led council, an equal opportunities commission helps protect gay rights. Some members of the council are however unhappy about a recent move for gay only swimming sessions in local pools. We see high angle views over Nottingham, [section of black where shots inside the city council’s equal opportunities office and views inside a swimming pool have been removed to a report about the local elections in Nottingham broadcast 30 April 1987]. Interviews with Councillor Peter Burgess of the Equal Opportunities Committee, the council's gay rights officer, Ben Benson and with Councillor Dennis Birkinshaw who asks how the pool is to be cleaned out.
