We see shots of a man reading a book he has written entitled 'The Worst Journey in the Midlands' to his two sons in front of a fire.
Then we see shots of the writer setting off in his rowing boat on the River Severn and his wife waving him off. We see shots of the writer rowing along the river and over a weir. This is followed by shots of Shrewsbury School and a conversation with two school boys as he rows along.
There are shots of the writer at night in a tent writing his diary.
Next we see shots of Ironbridge, Shropshire and the writer talks of notable people from the area including writer Mary Webb and swimmer Matthew Webb.
We see shots of the Boat Inn pub and the writer talking to a man about rescuing another man from the river.
This is followed by shots of Bridgnorth, Shropshire and a steam train from the Severn Valley railway travelling over a bridge near Bridgnorth. Next we see shots of bungalows by the river in Bewdley, Worcestershire (cut to music) This is followed by shots of the riverside at Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire. Finally the film ends with more shots of the man reading to his two sons.
