During the mid 1960s All Saints's Hospital in Birmingham (formerly known as the Birmingham City Mental Hospital) pioneered a specialist addiction treatment unit (these were later known as DDU's (Drug Dependancy Units)). Psychiatrists working in these units could prescribe heroin and cocaine in the course of treating addiction, under a licence supplied by the Home Office.
