Film Description

A 1975 ATV Today report by Bev Smith on the modernation of newspaper production at the oldest weekly newspaper in the world, Berrows Worcester Journal, by using computerised typeset.

The film includes shots of existing newspaper production lines using linotype operators and shots of the new computer which has been loaded with a database of 10,000 words. Bev Smith reports to camera as he showcases the computer's speed. There follows an Interview with Terry Izatt, regarding the faster system of converting a reporters copy into newspaper type via the computer system using punch tapes, bromide paper and a paste-up table. There is a second interview with a manager from the publishers about the cost saving potential of the new technique.

This news report contains some very strong shots of pre-computerised newspaper production as well as a detailed description of the computerised process in the mid 1970s.
