On April 4th Reg Harcourt interviewed Lord Olivier (then Sir Lawrence Oliver) about the play Juno and The Paycock by Sean O'Casey, a National Theatre production which premiered at Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham that day before transferring to London on 26th April.
He talks to Reg Harcourt about why he chose Birmingham for the premiere, describing the city's theatre goers as 'a marvellous audience, frightfully intelligent, warm, glowing and I thought if I can open this play out of town...I'm going to try Birmingham as I think they'll appreciate it.'
He also talks about his love of directing, why plays shouldn't be cast in order to cast star names and how important it is to him that he develops a strong theatre company as a lasting legacy.
