Description

The reel opens with shots of a presentation to a retiring worker in a factory yard. He is presented with a primitive looking teas-maid (with exposed bare light bulb).

‘Rubery Owen Annual Gala Day’. Views of a parade with decorated floats (likely to be around Darlaston - the home of Rubery Owen). One of the floats is a satire of the Beeching rail closures and a sign indicates this is the 1963 event.

We then see races for children on playing fields, a demonstration by a pair of performers on a trampoline and marching bands. A girl holds a balloon up to the camera showing that this is the Rubery Owen gala day held on 23 June 1962. We then see people inside a marquee playing bingo and further races for children outside.

‘Bilston’s Annual Carnival Day’. Opening shot shows performers wearing Hawaiian themed costumes then followed by views of marching bands, jazz and kazoo bands and decorated floats on a parade (said to be the 1964 event). The floats include 'Fenner Fashions' which is a spoof of the BBC sitcom 'The Rag Trade' and a couple of people dressed as Bill and Ben the flowerpot men. A carnival queen is visible on one of the floats.

‘Wednesfield Annual Carnival Day’. Another parade of floats and marching bands through the streets of Wednesfield. We then see a funfair including people riding on dodgems, a display of fairground organs and whippet racing.

‘Carnival Day at Coseley’. Decorated floats and marching bands on the streets of Coseley including a 'My Fair Lady' float and two Daleks (likely again to be 1964). ‘Inside Walsall Arboretum’. Day shots of displays constructed for the Walsall illuminations show (the 1963 event) including a floral display marking the centenary of the Red Cross, people on the boating lake followed by night shots of the park's illuminations.
