Description

We see Pearl Hyde at various events which are usually indicated with inter-titles although not always. 'Mayor Making 1957' (this section is b/w) shows Hyde at her first official ceremony; 'Visitors from Kiel 1956'. A group of men touring Coventry city centre precinct, cathedral ruins and flats (this pre-dates Hyde’s time as mayor). 'Opening of Fire Station 1957'. Hyde at opening event for new fire station at Canley including speeches and demonstration of firemen climbing extending ladders. 'Visit of Princess Margaret 1957'. Flags in precinct, decorated shops including Owen Owen, crowds holding Union flags, shots of a model of the city, Margaret’s arrival and being met by Hyde, children on suburban street, more union flags, royal cars arrive, Margaret and Hyde into house then shot of Margaret leaving Saint Oswald church at Tile Hill after attending consecration service (visit was 6 June 1957 the house she visited was also on Tile Hill estate). 'Coventry Carnival 1957'. Hyde in car, marching band, Carnival Queen, decorated floats, fair with rides and a tight-rope show and finally night shots of fireworks. 'Coventry Air Pageant 1957'. Hyde getting off helicopter on arrival at Baginton, crowd shots, aircraft on tarmac and aerobatics display and flypasts. Ends with a speech from Hyde and prize giving. 'Lord Mayor Opens Police HQ 1957'. Exteriors of the new building, police marching, inspection by Hyde and unveiling of plaque. 'Opening of Wimpey 6,000th Dwelling Tile Hill'. (b/w section). Exteriors of flats and houses, Hyde posing with family at opening event (this was on 12 December 1957 and marked Wimpey's buiding of 6,270 houses in Coventry - this house was on Plants Hill Crescent). 'Christmas Lights In Broadgate 1957'. (b/w section) Lights on Owen Owen store, Hepworths and night street scenes.

'Visit of Mr J.A. Malik Soviet Ambassador'. Hyde greets Yakov Malik (Jacob Malik) and introduces him to various dignitaries in a room followed by walking tour of city centre with new cathedral construction visible. 'Visit of Mr J. H. Whitney United States Ambassador 1958'. Hyde, Whitney and others meet and greet in a room. 'Visit of HRH The Duchess of Kent to Open the Belgrade Theatre March 1958'. (all of this visit is b/w) Hyde greeting Duchess outside Council House followed by tour of cathedral building site accompanied by Basil Spence. 'Woodlands School Broad Lane'. Arrival of cars and tour of school. 'Arrival at Belgrade Theatre'. Duchess in foyer meeting people. 'Opening of M.S.A. Sports Ground May 1958'. Hyde at opening of Municipal Sports Ground including speeches and Hyde having a go at bowls. 'Visit of Wife of Norwegian Prime Minister to Hawthorne Lodge and Family Home Gravel Hill May 1958'. Norwegian woman tours what looks like an old people’s home (Hyde doesn’t appear to be present and a sign indicates we are at Hawthorn Lodge). The film ends with a b/w section of Hyde making a speech at another unidentified event.
