Summary Four recent news stories compiled for Midland Montage: cellar dwellers; new racing car; Lord Mayor opens old people's home; and soap box car race.
Description Cellar dwellers: people living in the cellar of a house. We see the outside of a terraced house - an open hatch is visible which provides light for a cellar. Next, inside the cellar we see a woman making a bed - there are three beds visible in cramped conditions. Finally we see damp on the walls of the cellar. This Item was first broadcast on Midlands News 13 September 1960 (item 2769). New racing car: A single seater racing car is seen being worked on in a garage. A mechanic holds a spark plug up to the sill of the car to demonstrate its low ground clearance. This item is probably related to Midlands News item 2773 broadcast on 13 September 1960 although not viewed yet to check. Lord Mayor of Birmingham opens old people's home: We see an establishing shot of Yardley Grange in Birmingham and then the Lord Mayor Garnet Boughton making a speech to an audience. Finally there are shots of elderly people sitting in a day room at Yardley Grange. Item first broadcast in Midlands News 13 September 1960 (item 2771). Soap box car race: We see a group of boys with their soap box cars. They are then seen racing them down a steep field, two take a tumble. Finally we see one boy driving his through a flaming hoop. Item is probably derived from Midlands News 12 September 1960 (item 2767): Weekend round up: Soap Box Slope Drag. Location not recorded.
